The book is an attempt to focus specifically on how some remarkable work has been done in some cities to bring about a substantial change in the public transport system and in improving mobility. Each one of them offers lessons for other cities to consider and follow and also highlights the role and relevance of the NUTP. Here is an instrument available to the cities and towns to take proactive steps to bring about changes and many of the central schemes and programs that have played a significant role in setting the pace for such remarkable initiatives.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dr M Ramachandran had a distinguished career in the Indian Administrative Service, spanning over 38 years. He was Chief Secretary, Uttarakhand, and then Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Urban Development for a period of four years. It was during his tenure that the annual feature of Urban Mobility India International Conference and the National Urban Transport Awards system was initiated. He pioneered initiatives like introduction of the concept of Service Level Benchmarks, providing 15,000 modern new buses to more than 70 cities, urban transport reforms at the city level, urban bus specifications, BRTS in more cities and the first system wide PPP in Metro rail in Hyderabad.
